Press Statement by Mmusi Maimane, Chairperson of the Southern African Platform for Democratic Change

03 February 2017

Release: Immediate

The Southern African Platform for Democratic Change (SAPDC) mourns the death of veteran Opposition Leader, Étienne Tshisekedi (84), who led the Democratic Republic of Congo’s official opposition, the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS).

Mr Tshisekedi, during his long and illustrious political career, stood up for democracy and justice in the face of dictatorship and the erosion of the will of the people, a cornerstone of democratic governance. Mr Tshisekedi, displayed his sense of service to the people by even standing up against those considered to be his close political allies, when they veered off the path of democracy and human rights.

The people of the DRC and the continent of Africa are left poorer by the death of this giant of African politics. Equally so, DRC is in a better position because of Mr Tshisekedi who was a bellowing voice for accountability and freedom. He will be remembered for his stand against those who practiced Big Man Politics.

On behalf the Executive Committee of the SAPDC, I would like to convey my deepest and most sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Mr Tshisekedi. May the people of the DRC continue to carry the torch of peace, democracy and justice, which Mr Tshisekedi carried for decades in order to light a new path for the DRC.-END-
